We invited our amazing ELA coach, Mrs. Noles, to teach a fun writing lesson about recess this week. We are so proud of all the hard work the kiddos put into their pieces!

THANK YOU!

Our class so generously received this document camera and Astrobright colored cardstock to use for class games from our Amazon Wish List, and we want to say a huge THANK YOU! What a special surprise! Unfortunately, there was no slip in either package indicating who donated this gift to us. If it was you, please let me know so we can properly thank you!

THIS WEEK, WE LEARNED ABOUT...

  • Reading - using FAST (feelings, actions, what the character says, and what the character thinks) to determine character traits
  • Writing - Prompt: What did you play at recess?; hooking readers with an onomatopoeia in the topic sentence, expanding sentences with adjectives
  • Phonics - open and closed syllables (if the word ends in a vowel --> open, if the word ends in a consonant --> closed)
  • Math -
    • 2.1 - place value & modeling to 1000; skip counting; counting to 120; multiple ways to represent a number
    • 2.4 - place value; base ten modeling; using expanded form to add two, 2- to 4-digit numbers; using base ten blocks to subtract numbers; counting coins, money word problems
  • Science - states of matter (solids, liquids, gases)

"Late start" day information

Our first "Late Start" day is this upcoming Monday, September 20th. Please see the below message sent out via Blackboard by Principal Cooke earlier this week -

"The superintendent has added six “Late Start” days to the calendar in order to give teachers some additional time to review student data and to make instructional decisions in collaboration with colleagues. Teachers will be in meetings on a rotational basis and we will provide coverage for the impacted teachers. Students who arrive at the normal school time will be engaged in academic tasks, but whole group instruction will not begin until 8:40 a.m.

Some logistics for you:

  • Buses and the cafeteria operate on their normal schedules.
  • Carpool will run at its normal time, but there will also be a second carpool arrival time of 8:25-8:40 a.m. offered.
  • Students that arrive later than 8:40 a.m. will be considered tardy.
  • Specials for second grade students will have their time adjusted to 9:45-10:30 a.m.

"Late Start" Dates:
  • September 20th
  • October 25th
  • November 15th
  • January 24th
  • February 28th
  • March 21st

Please note that schools have some autonomy on how the Late Start Days operate. Therefore, if you have children at other schools you may receive different information on how their mornings are organized."

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

  • Thursday, September 16th - First set of Sign and Return papers were sent home (please see your child's folder)
    • Sign and Return papers will be sent home every other Thursday in your child's folder. Please review your child's classwork with him/her, then we kindly ask that you sign and return the packet in your child's black communication journal at your earliest convenience. Thank you!
